new christmas music

The grubby post-christmas haze is upon us and I have made my annual foray to Fopp to waste money on CDs.

New CDs I have bought include

Bright Eyes - Motion Sickness. A rather spiffing live set.
Bright Eyes - Digital ashes in a digital urn. Different. A bit 'pretty hate machine' era nine inch nails on first listen but I will listen again.
The national - Alligator. Pretty damn good so far. Needs more listens

From the £3 bargain bin I have indulged my inner ned with

Happy Mondays - Greatest Hits
Travis - singles (for the sensitive ned although I do like some of their stuff)
The streets - second album with long title. They were funny when I saw them in birmingham in march.

i also picked up some cool cheap DVDs - supersize me, rumblefish and the 'burbs but as this is required records i won't say any more.

i'll tell you more about the cds later

good choice with alligator!
i have problems with bright eyes as apparently he got really pissed at glastonbury and slagged off john peel. on the john peel stage, i think.

shouldn't detract from his music, but does.

shout me if you're ever in leeds/want any national b-sides forwarding (highly recommended)

happy new year!

Hi Zoe,

I heard about his twat like behaviour and I wasn't impressed. I tried not to like him but some of his songs are just too good. I just have to assume that he is young, stupid and on some sort of mind altering substance when he dissed the peel.

I've got an old 9 track national ep thing that is pretty good although I don't listen to it much. The new record is good study music. It's kinda real and faltering. I like it when you can hear the flaws in someones voice. Probably cos I'm such a shit singer!

likewise if you are ever north of the border/in my home city and you want a tour guide (and i'm not working)

I hadn't really heard about bright eyes slagging john peel - that sucks. zoe's right - it DOES make you less inclined to like the songs.

hmmm, must be something about the conflict in giving praise and adulation to someone who acts like a twat. hard not to like the music though.

ps. bought arcade fire - promising - needs more listens though :)

I tried not to like bright eyes cos of the john peel thing but some of those songs are just so damn good. I haven't forgiven him but I guess in a global karma balance type thing he probably comes out on top cos he slags off george bush much more.

young and stupid. we've all been there. i remember saying that i would never listen to 'jane's addiction' cos they were 'glam poofs'. i too was a complete tosser as a kid.

keep listening to arcade fire. it gets better.

so, arcade fire is definitely growing on me. I just love tunnels already.

having said that, I don't think it would be a protagonist for my album of the year - that slot is occupied by lcd soundsystem for 2005.
I was at a superb techno night at cabaret voltaire last night, and they played an amazing mix of "tribulations" - I was in heaven :)

The LCD soundsystem is great. I listen to it on my iPod a lot. I saw them in the Birmingham Academy in March and they were brilliant. Really loud and really energetic. Good stage presence. My pal was almost deaf after the show. I missed the december glasgow gig cos of work.

The guy out of LCD soundsystem used to be in a couple of punk bands. Pony and six-fingered satellite I think. He has worked with thinfamous steve albini so I expect interesting things from the band in the future.

If you like LCD have you heard the rapture. DFA (LCD when they produce bands) did their last two releases which are worth checking out. 'House of jealous lovers' is a classic although I do think LCD soundsystem are better.

Really glad that you like arcade fire. My favourite song is 'laika' although 'tunnels' is a close second. The lyrical content/feel of the neutral milk hotel album that I've written about elsewhere on this blog is similar but I do prefer Arcade Fire.

Ass was kicked! very good show. will really make effort to see them again. I saw the rapture a couple of years ago. they were ok but not quite as good.

time to boast. i can't actually count the number of bands that I've see but I've been to well over 250 gigs since 1992. I've seen loads of cool bands. Lost count now. LCD were good but not the best. not sure who the best were but i'll do a top ten some time in my OCD way.
